Guerneville is historically know for it's logging community that was formed there in the late 1800s. Along with it's natural beauty, liberal atmosphere, and proximity to wine-tasting and redwood forests. It was founded by the Guerne family in the 1850s. Local indians called the Pomos used the area as a summer camp and called it Ceola (/ˈsiːoʊleɪ/ or cee-oh-lay) which meant "shady place. Except for a large, beauitiful stand of ancient trees preserved in the Fife Creek watershed which is now the centerpeice of Armstrong Woods Park (Armstrong Redwood Park). Many of the trees were logged in the 19th century, giving rise to the name Stumptown. The anual town parade still commemorates the old  place by naming it Stumptown Days. The name Guerneville was introduced in honor of the Swiss immigrant George Guerne, a local busisnessman of the 19th century who owned the town's sawmill.  The area became popular with wealthy vacationers from San Fransisco and sourounding communities in the late 19th century,A public beach area in the heart of the town along the Russian River used for swimming, fishing, boating, and sunbathing. Just like the past the river is open to the public. In the century of 2000, there were 2,441 people, 1,097 households, and 523 families reciding in CDP. The population density was 743/sq mi (287/km). Then again Guerneville was and remains a enjoyable little town.
